Preview

The San Francisco Giants host the Toronto Blue Jays at Oracle Park on Wednesday, July 8, with first pitch set for 3:45 PM ET. Logan Webb gets the ball for San Francisco against former Padres ace Dylan Cease, now pitching for Toronto, in what shapes up as one of the better individual pitching matchups you'll find on a mid-week summer afternoon. With the second half of the season just around the corner, how Webb performs in outings like this one will matter when October positioning comes into focus.

Probable Starters: Logan Webb vs. Dylan Cease

Webb is the anchor of this Giants rotation and the player this organization trusts most when the game has weight to it. He works with precision — mixing his sinker and changeup to generate weak contact and keep pitch counts manageable deep into games. Oracle Park suits his style perfectly, and the Giants need him sharp.

Cease brings serious strikeout upside to the visiting side. His slider is a genuine swing-and-miss pitch, and he has the capability to dominate lineups that chase. The Giants will need to be disciplined at the plate to avoid letting him work into a rhythm early.

San Francisco Giants Lineup

  • 1. Heliot Ramos, LF
  • 2. Luis Arraez, 2B
  • 3. Casey Schmitt, 3B
  • 4. Rafael Devers, 1B
  • 5. Jung Hoo Lee, RF
  • 6. Willy Adames, SS
  • 7. Bryce Eldridge, DH
  • 8. Drew Gilbert, CF
  • 9. Eric Haase, C

Toronto Blue Jays Lineup

  • 1. Ernie Clement, 2B
  • 2. Nathan Lukes, RF
  • 3. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 1B
  • 4. George Springer, DH
  • 5. Daulton Varsho, CF
  • 6. Kazuma Okamoto, 3B
  • 7. Alejandro Kirk, C
  • 8. Jonatan Clase, LF
  • 9. Andrés Giménez, SS

Keys to Watch

  • Luis Arraez vs. Cease: Arraez hitting second gives San Francisco a contact-first presence early in the order. Getting him on base ahead of Schmitt and Devers can put immediate pressure on Cease before he settles in.
  • Rafael Devers in the cleanup spot: Devers batting fourth puts serious left-handed power in the heart of this order. Cease will have to make decisions about how to attack him, and any mistake gets punished at Oracle Park's right-field dimensions.
  • Bryce Eldridge as DH: The young first baseman getting DH reps at this stage of the season is worth watching. Every at-bat against a quality arm like Cease is a development data point for this organization.
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for Toronto: The Blue Jays run through their first baseman. If Webb isn't locating down in the zone against Guerrero, this game can turn in a hurry. Keep an eye on how Webb sequences him.
  • Jonatan Clase on the bases: Clase has speed and can change the complexity of an inning quickly if he reaches. Haase and Webb will need to be aware of him in any late-game situation.

Prediction

This one comes down to who wins the pitching duel, and at Oracle Park, with Webb on the mound, the lean goes to San Francisco. Webb's home splits and his ability to suppress hard contact give the Giants the edge in a game that could easily end 3-1 or 2-1. Expect a tight, well-pitched game. Giants win, 3-2.
