Preview

The San Francisco Giants welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to Oracle Park on Saturday, September 26, with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 PM ET. Matt Wilkinson takes the ball for San Francisco against Dodgers left-hander Blake Snell. With the regular season winding down, every game against a division rival carries weight, and a matchup between these two NL West clubs at a packed Oracle Park is as charged as it gets in late September.

Giants vs. Dodgers Starting Pitchers: Wilkinson vs. Snell

The pitching matchup tells two very different stories. Blake Snell arrives as one of the more accomplished arms in the National League, a two-time Cy Young Award winner who has the repertoire to shut down any lineup on any given day. San Francisco counters with Matt Wilkinson, who gets the opportunity to prove himself on one of baseball's biggest stages — a late-season home game against the Dodgers.

Wilkinson will need to limit the damage early. The Dodgers load their lineup with impact bats from top to bottom, and falling behind in the first couple of innings against this club is a difficult hole to climb out of.

Los Angeles Dodgers Lineup to Watch

The Dodgers are bringing their full complement of stars to San Francisco. Mookie Betts leads off from shortstop, followed immediately by Shohei Ohtani hitting second as the designated hitter — a combination at the top of any order that demands respect. Will Smith bats third, Teoscar Hernández cleans up at four, and Kyle Tucker slots in at five in right field. That is five legitimate run-producers before you even get to the bottom half of the order.

Tommy Edman rounds out the lineup at nine, hitting second base. Miguel Rojas, Andy Pages, and Enrique Hernández fill out spots six through eight. There is no soft landing anywhere in this order for Wilkinson.

San Francisco Giants Lineup

  • 1. Jonah Cox, 2B
  • 2. Turner Hill, CF
  • 3. Victor Bericoto, DH
  • 4. Bo Davidson, RF
  • 5. Brett Harris, 1B
  • 6. Andrew Knizner, C
  • 7. Shay Whitcomb, 3B
  • 8. Scott Bandura, LF
  • 9. Christian Koss, SS

Jonah Cox and Turner Hill set the table at the top of the order, with Victor Bericoto following in the three hole as the designated hitter. Bo Davidson gets the cleanup spot in right field, and Brett Harris takes first base at five. The Giants will need production from the middle of that order if they want to stay competitive against Snell, who can be genuinely difficult to score against when he is on his game.

Keys to Watch at Oracle Park

  • Wilkinson's command early: Getting through the Ohtani-Betts-Will Smith portion of the Dodgers order without a crooked number is essential. Falling behind those hitters and running deep pitch counts in the first two innings is a fast path to a short outing.
  • Giants' ability to make contact against Snell: Snell's strikeout rate is elite. The Giants will need to put balls in play and work counts rather than trying to match him swing for swing.
  • The middle of San Francisco's order: Bericoto and Davidson need to drive Cox and Hill home when the opportunities arise. Against a pitcher of Snell's caliber, the Giants cannot afford to leave runners stranded.
  • Oracle Park atmosphere: A late-September home game against the Dodgers draws a loud, engaged crowd. Home-field energy is real, and the Giants should feel it Saturday.

Prediction

This is a steep climb for the Giants. Blake Snell is a proven front-line starter and the Dodgers lineup is loaded with players who punish mistakes. Matt Wilkinson is unproven at this level of competition based on available information, and the margin for error is slim. Still, Oracle Park is a legitimate home-field advantage, and the Giants lineup has the pieces to manufacture a couple of crooked innings if they stay disciplined at the plate. Look for a competitive game that comes down to the bullpen — but lean toward Los Angeles pulling this one out, 5-3. Prove us wrong, Giants.
